The kids got to tour a Dairy Queen!

(I’m just proud the kids didn’t stick their heads under
ice cream dispenser)

Sunday night we went over to a neighbor’s
house for dinner and play-time.

Originally, we were supposed to go swimming,
but the high temperature was only 72!

They had this rootbeer that used real cane
sugar.  It was really good….

Aunt J hung out with the kids so Mom and Dad could see
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
(loved the movie, even though it was sad)

Thank you Aunt J!  The kids had fun.

Little Lady took this self portrait.

I actually love the soft focus.

Bad Day + Guitar Hero = Better Day
(don’t most rockers wear Dockers?)

Little Man invited a friend (on swing) over
to our lush backyard.

(okay… most of the time, they spent inside,
on the Wii)

You try to tell a kid it is bed time
when the sun is still out!

Thanks Daylight Saving Time!

(Little Lady said:
“…it is NOT bedtime… look outside…
do YOU see the moon?”)

Get up…. CHECK!

Eat breakfast…  CHECK!

 Save neighborhood kids… CHECK!

This monster was 8 feet from my mailbox when I
went to get the paper this morning!

The shell was over a foot in diameter.

It was in the street, a long way from any pond.

My first instinct was to leave it the hell alone, but I worried
about the kids in the neighborhood.

It looked dead, but if you come up to the front, it would snap
at you!

The head goes out 6-8 inches, so it has surprising distance and
speed.  Also notice the prehistoric claws.

I would have felt bad if, by my inaction, a kid lost a digit. (or two)

Having delt with a snapper before…*

*See chapter 6 of the Adventures of Mom and Dad
(maybe SnapMom can tell you that story)

The best way to transport a snapping turtle is shovel,
after it has been run over with a semi truck.

If the creature is alive, you need something very thick
and very flexible.  We found the best thing is a heavy rubber
car mat.

The car mat is thick enough to glance the turtle’s blow,
long enough for you to drop the mat and run like hell.

ONLY grab the turtle from the absolute back.  The turtle
head can snap back and reach almost half of his shell…
No kidding.

So imagine me and this heavy turtuga, wrapped in a car mat heading
down the neighborhood.

I am carrying this thing as far away from my body as possible,
which was difficult because it was heavy as hell.

I took him to the big pond with no houses around it.  I put it down
by the water.  It just sat there and snapped at me.

I was worried it would snap a the next person who came
down by the pond, so I picked him up again and threw the turtle
into the murky waters.

My arms are tired and I am still shaking….

I am going on a long, long bike ride to calm down.
